It wasn't long ago that baseball in October didn't exist in Philadelphia. This was Eagles country and the Phillies were playing golf. Now, with one of the best Phillies teams of all time, Philly fans are fully appreciative of this playoff season. Women are accessorizing with red sweaters, toddlers are sporting Utley t-shirts and 50 year old men are dressed for work in jerseys and caps. But the fact that we are all wearing our gear is no surprise. The atmosphere and excitement the Phillies have created is simply put - awesome.
The games themselves have been great - a no hitter, a come from behind win - everything a fan could ask for. The excitement shared between fans has been just as much fun. While we were at Darling's Diner at the Piazza, our waitress Desiree gave us updates during the game as we didn't have the best view. The crowd both in the diner and outside in the square was so electric that we always knew something was going on - we just needed the exact information. Similarly, my Facebook news page was lit up with people talking about the games. During the no hitter, some people were afraid to talk, listen or read about it ("Stop talking about the no/no") while others cheered it the entire way. I think, in fact, I could follow entire games by my friends status updates.
With the win this past Sunday putting the Phils in the NL Championship, I think it is time for everyone to join in. Who cares if you don't like sports? Who cares if you think they are playing football? (Yes Steve, I read your status). Jump on the bandwagon. Everyone looks good in red. Especially in October.
