Why I Love Philly - POST

For true art lovers, the only thing better than seeing artwork displayed is perhaps seeing where and how it is created. Thanks to the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours, or POST, this idea is a reality. What began as a collaborative effort between 13 artists in 2000 is now a huge city wide event spanning two weekends at the beginning of every October and features hundreds of artists and their studios. The tour itself is broken into two weekends due to the large numbers of participants. This past weekend Studios West of Broad Street were open and this coming weekend, October 9th and 10th, Studios East of Broad Street will be open from 12-6 pm.

While I am excited to visit the Studios and Artists at places like 2424 Studios and The Crane Arts Building, my personal favorite stop on the tour is the place where I first heard of POST: The Atlas Building. Located in the heart of Port Richmond, what once was a coffin factory is now a live and work space for several artists, wood workers and musicians (I am hoping that Ted Richardson of Cedar Street Studios will be performing during my visit). The tenants of this building have a true love and support for each other and their crafts that I believe POST was created to exemplify. The co-habitants of this building and Weizer Management, the owners, co-exist so amazingly that the artists decided to build a roof deck so that they could hang out together more. I love coming in to see the new furniture and artwork that is displayed and more importantly, to experience this true artistic community. I particularly love the furniture of Adam Rung who makes unique custom made pieces (and according to his testimonials, does so with extreme concern and patience with his clients needs).Please be sure to add this venue to your tour this coming weekend!
