Why I Love Philly - Penn Treaty Park

Set right off of Delaware Avenue (Columbus Blvd) and Beach Street and literally sitting on the Delaware River lies Penn Treaty Park. A small, clean and well maintained park that is part of the Fairmount Park Commission, this beautiful gem is my little piece of heaven within the city limits.

The first thing I noticed when I entered the park was the open space where several people were playing with their dogs. There is almost always a frisbee catching canine or a group of dogs sniffing hello. Pet owners, thankfully, clean up after their pets so the grounds are clean for the families that visit daily. For our convenience, there are picnic tables where I often see games of chess being played and benches set up throughout the park where you can sit and enjoy the views. A running trail winds through the small park with beautiful views of the Ben Franklin Bridge, Center City and the river itself.

With special thanks to the Friends of Penn Treaty Park, a grass roots organization created in 2005 to *"preserve and promote the park as a positive green space for family and community", the park continues to be maintained and improved on a regular basis. They added the benches and the playground equipment, lighting for the William Penn statue and have plans for additional lighting and beautification. The little playground contains a few sets of swings, a balance beam and a piece of equipment for climbing and sliding. Enough to entertain my little guy while I sit out in the open air enjoying another aspect of why I love Philly.

The Friends of Penn Treaty Park are holding a Halloween hoedown on Saturday October 23, 2010 from 10am -noon with live music, a pumpkin patch, hayride and more. Visit www.penntreatypark.org for more details.
