Why I Love Philly - Philabundance

This weekend when I was picking up my son from my parents, I saw the Boy Scouts delivering their Food Drive bags and sure enough when we arrived home, there was one on our door as well. The Scouting for Food Collection is just one of the ways Philabundance is working to collect and distribute food to hungry men, women and children in the Delaware Valley this year.

Though they are a year round organization, providing food to over 900,000 residents in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties, for me, seeing the Philabundance trucks and donation locations is as much a part of the holidays as is the light show at Lord and Taylor. Sponsored by 6ABC and IKEA, this year there are several ways to help out in our community, each easier than the next. Cans can be brought to the two local IKEA stores located in South Philly and Conshohocken or to the 6ABC Thanksgiving Day Parade. Starting on November 26th, Acme is accepting donations including donating a virtual bag of groceries. The Boy Scouts of course, will be picking up their donation bags on November 20th. My personal favorite? I love that I can donate one, three or five dollars at WAWA and several grocery stores by simply tearing off a ticket and having it rung up at checkout.

Most importantly about these food drives and collections, I love to see how donating affects those that contribute. Schools and businesses have their own drives and people work together in the most unique and big-hearted of ways. While it may seem that the holiday season is what brings out the generosity of those in this community, I think that giving to those in need is truly what makes the holidays the most special time of the year.
