Why I Love Philly - Restaurants - Taco Riendo

At the corner of 5th and Thompson Streets,  one block north of Girard Ave.,  lies one of my favorite BYOB restaurants in Philly: Taco Riendo. The food at this authentic and affordable Taqueria is an awesome collection of genuine Mexican recipes and dishes. In fact, the menu is written first in Spanish with the English translation underneath. I have loved every meal that I have had here and am especially fond of their cuisine this winter. Let's face it. A little taste of Mexico can't be bad with all of this snow and rain.

A small breakfast menu is served between 9am and 12pm  only and includes a variety of interesting combinations. From the Burrito Mexicano (scrambled egg with grilled cactus) to the Taco con Papa y Queso Oaxaca (mexican home fries with oaxaco cheese taco) the menu offers delicious options that are certainly a change from the norm for this area.  Of course, there are always the egg burritos for the less adventurous types.

The lunch/dinner menu also offers a ton of options for both the adventurous and those that like to play it safe. While you can find the typical taco, quesadilla and burrito, (and by the way, the "typical" chicken burrito is packed with their fresh, tasty ingredients and one of the best we've tasted) there are alternatives that you may not find everywhere else. I am partial to the Suadero Sopes  - three round hand made corn tortillas topped with flank steak, black beans, onions, salsa and mexican cheese.  For the record, I get mine without onions due to an allergy, so they do make alterations to their menu. We've tasted a few of their sides (rice and beans, nachos) and several types of their tacos as well and our meals have always been fantastic. There also is at least one vegetarian option for each section: burritos, enchiladas,  quesadillas, tostadas, and tacos. You can round out your meal with a mexican soda or the Agua de Horchata (freshly made rice milk with cinnamon) and add flan for dessert.

Sunday through Thursday   9am-9pm

Friday and Saturday   9am-10pm
