100 Things to do in Philly + Events + Philadelphia Deals & more!
For the last few summers, The Piazza in Northern Liberties has treated us to a slew of free concerts located in the acoustically majestic "courtyard" that sits in the middle of the complex. If you are unfamiliar with the term "acoustically" or "acoustics", it just means that the sound is great in there. It bounces off of the encompassing walls and funnels straight into your cochlea (the sound receptors in your ears) with perfectly balanced amounts of treble and bass.
Anyway, since 2010, the Summer Block Party has boasted acts such as Imagine Dragons, AWOLNATION, Of Monsters and Men, Switchfoot, Neon Trees, Matt and Kim, Young the Giant, and Company of Theives; even Eve6 made an appearance! That's not too shabby for a brand new event located in between a couple of apartment complexes. It's almost 1/3 of a Bonnaroo lineup, and it's all FREE.
That's correct, zero dollars. This year, zero dollars gets you within a stone's throw of some of the best upcoming and established acts in music. The 2013 lineup includes Atlas Genius, Metirc and Cold War Kids, with many more bands to be named.
The first of this summers series is this Saturday, May 4th, where we'll see performances from Family of the Year, the aforementioned Atlas Genius, and Jackson Kingsley. The show starts at 3:45pm and runs until 7pm, any and all ages are welcome and yes, there is booze and food.
So, the only question now is why wouldn't you go? If you're any kind of music fan, if you like to discover new bands or if you just like live music, this is a wonderful event to attend.
Remember, bring zero dollars to get in, but bring some dollars for sustenance (booze and food). I will see you all there!
