Recent Excursions in Mexico (well, with mexican food).

For whatever reason, I am not 100% sure why, I have been bitten by the ol' Mexican food bug. I can't get enough of it at the moment. Now, mind you, there is a huge difference between really good Mexican food and even above average Mexican food. Much like the difference between college and professional football.

But, when it's done right, it's hard to beat. I love Thai food, Italian, German, BBQ, everything. But a good Mexican meal can make you realize the power of simplicity in cooking, and just how good food can taste. It is mind boggling how delicious something can be when it only entails two or three ingredients. Anyway, my most recent excursions have led me to Taco Suave in Warrington and La Morena in Horsham. If you can, do yourself a favor and get over to these two spots ASAP. The ambiance is authentic, the prices are more than affordable and at both places, you're in and out in 45 minutes.

At Taco Suave, I found the motherload. Every Mexican junky's dream, every Mexican chef's aspiration. The PERFECT chimichanga. Perfectly fried, no grease, incredible crema, perfect rice/chicken/tomato/guacamole distribution. Complemented by a humble but exquisite platter of rice and beans, it was the single best Mexican dish I have ever had. No lie. Not to mention, it was part of a combo platter with a carnitas taco and a perfectly made beef tongue (lengua) sopa. Yum.

Next, I went to La Morena. This little hole in the wall off of Old York Rd., no AC (so go on a cooler night), great guacamole, and some of the best authentic tacos I've ever had. If you ever find yourself here, do your tum tum a favor and order the beef tongue, el pastor and fish tacos. The beef tongue is like the outside, tender strip of a prime rib. The part everyone knows they like best. This place does it better than anywhere I have ever been. I cannot stress enough how good this thing is. The el pastor is braised carnitas mixed with cooked pineapple, a delicious Mexican take on the Hawaiian combination. And the fish taco speaks for itself. Lets just say its made me never want a fried fish taco ever again. Don't just stick to the tacos, though. The burritos are great, the flautas are to die for and their home made gorditas make Taco Bell look like, well, Taco Bell.

Do yourself a favor and visit both of these spots which, BTW are both BYO.

Next up on my list: Rey Azteca (Warminster)
