100 Things to do in Philly + Events + Philadelphia Deals & more!
Philadelphia Eagles’ new safetys’ coach Mike Zordich knows the importance of veteran leadership in a secondary, he also knows there isn’t a great abundance of it in Philadelphia. Through his eyes there really only one safety the Eagles have with true NFL experience and that is eight year veteran Quintin Mikell.
Quintin, or “Q”, has played fundementally sound football since taking over for Sean Considine and came very close to earning his second straight pro bowl nomination in 2010, earning his first following the 2009 season. Whereas Quintin might not be the type of player you can expect to get many interceptions, he is a tackling machine.
The 2010 season marked Mikell’s third consecutive season accumulating more than 100 tackles in each season since becoming a starter for the Eagles organization. In 2008 he recorded 169 tackles, registered another 122 in 2009, and topped off last season with 111 tackles.
Marlin Jackson, who was acquired last offseason, is entering his seventh season in the league but his career has been plagued by injuries which typically results in him missing the better part of a season—if not the whole season!
However there is a good possibility that Zordich would want to keep him around simply for his NFL experience and the fact that he has at least one full year studying the playbook. Another player with some experience is fourth year man Antoine Harris (4) who also sidelined with an injury.
Beyond that though there might be a player with some time in the league but none of which have any true playing time with the exception of rookie Nate Allen, who also was forced to watch the end of the season from the sideline due to injury.
Notice among all those players with less experience than him who have endured season ending injuries and Quintin’s name never came up—not once! You can add the fact that he is as durable as they get in this league to the list of reasons why he needs to be dealt a new deal.
The last time Mikell saw any significant loss of playing time because of injury was back in 2007 after suffering a torn ACL in the second quarter during the Eagles/Dolphins matchup. Since being named the starter though he hasn’t missed a single game that I can think of, or find.
There has been some chatter about bringing in Oshiomogho Atogwe to play safety but I can think of one big reason off the top of my head why the Eagles should not do so.
Quintin knows this system like the back of his hand so why would you want to bring in someone who would have to learn a brand new scheme and terminology? These are my reasons why Quintin Mikell is vital to resign prior to March 3 at midnight!
