Kolbmoddity: Does Auburn QB Cam Newton's Pro Day Impact Kevin Kolb's Trade Value?

With the NFL pro days officially under way and the majority of the hype surrounding Auburn quarterback Cam Newton (6'5, 248 lbs) improved performance over his combine showing.

I started to wonder how Cam's day will impact the Philadelphia Eagles. More importantly how does it affect the value of backup quarterback Kevin Kolb, if at all?

Last month Cam showed up at the NFL combine and really put a sour spot in the gut of nearly every team owner after completing just 11 of 21 passes.

His mechanics were off as he failed to use his legs properly to create velocity behind his throws, but with such a naturally strong throwing arm he was still able to propel the ball anywhere from 50-60 yards downfield.

Still he was aware that his performance was less than desirable and he wasn't happy with the way the day went overall telling the Associated Press; "I left there not happy with my performance".

Last stat note of importance regarding Cam Newton's combine day is the all mighty 40 yard dash which Cam received an official time of 4.59 seconds at the combine.

In all I'm sure it was a day that he would love to have back and give it another effort because his draft stock immediately took a hit, some experts even claimed that he dropped from initially being a projected top five pick down to a possible early second round selection.

He had just one more chance to redeem himself at the Pro Day and Cam did just that, he came out and fired on all cylinders in front of 125 league officials.

FOXSports.com's and frequent guest on Eagles Live Adam Caplan explains that Cam's performance at his Pro Day was far more impressive over his combine results saying "he did a much better job than he did at the NFL combine last month". He continued by stating that this time around Newton threw close to 60 balls compared to the 25-30 at the combine.

ESPN.com analyst John Clayton believes that Newton would be an excellent fit for teams like the Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers, both of whom are in need of a solid starting quarterback. The problem that the vast majority of NFL teams have with Cam has nothing to do with his natural ability; it's his lack of experience that concerns them most having started just one season with Auburn.

So where does Newton's see-saw like performances leave the Eagles and quarterback Kevin Kolb? In the exact same position prior to the combine, maybe a tad better. Had Cam come out and have a repeat of the combine it would've surely catapulted Kolb's value through the roof but that isn't what happened.

Instead he (Cam) put on the display that eluded him during the combine and he did re-raise his draft stock, but now teams are aware that he might need time to develop and if they do draft him there will be a level of patience that could be required while he matures into a starting role.

The list of teams might dip slightly after yesterday and as the Pro Days continue but there is still going to be a handful of teams that will be serious contenders for Kevin Kolb’s services if there is indeed a 2011 season.

With no less than 10 teams most likely searching for a new QB and only five rated high enough to be considered starting material entering the draft.

So the winds seem to be blowing in favor of the Eagles regardless of how impressive anyone QB does at their Pro Day—Kevin is still going to be a Kolb-mmodity around the league!

That is if the price is right!
