The Paraphernalia of Being

Monday, June 5 – Saturday, July 29, 2017

Opening Reception

Saturday, June 10, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

The Paraphernalia of Being features eight Philadelphia-based artists who comprise AUTOMAT Collective (Steve Basel, Nadine Beauharnois, Emily Elliott, Morgan Hobbs. Lucas Kelly, Julia Owens, Marcelle Reinecke, Jillian Schley). Approached with humor and gravity condensed and concentrated by the influences of cramped apartments and noisy city life, these artists present works that offer glimpses of reliable conundrums and antics of the human condition. Internal dialogues become visual in this exhibition and boundaries of painting, printmaking and sculpture mingle. Landscapes of private ruminations yield paintings of shadowy manifestations and earthly figures. Twisting colorful gestures suggestive of the body are paired with weighty, rectilinear and stark forms offering comparisons of experience and artistic expression. Infinite space is conjured in tiny pockets. The works in this exhibition affirm the emotional and physical hang-ups of domestic life while concocting imaginative possibilities beyond the purview of the everyday.
