Event Description

Interdisciplinary artist Rashaad Newsome’s multipart project, Black Magic, is on view at Philadelphia Photo Arts Center. Black Magic is a holistic reflection on agency, Blackness, and the futurity of intersectional identities and oppression. The project is comprised of three separate elements: To Be Real, visually stunning collages housed in custom frames that use augmented reality lenses to reveal hidden aspects; Being, a cloud-based, A.I. humanoid, populated with the works of radical authors and revolutionaries; and Ansista, a 3D life-like creation outfitted to represent traditional African and drag ballroom aesthetics.
