Art in the Open

PHILADELPHIA, PA:  From Friday, May 18 through Sunday, May 20, the banks of the Schuylkill River in downtown Philadelphia, will once again become an outdoor studio as selected artists begin making art in full public view, outdoors, over the three day period.

Art in the Open is a public art event that draws attention to the city’s outdoor spaces, natural areas, and historic waterways through the act and action of artists and their creative expressions. Presented in partnership with the Philadelphia’s Office of Arts and Culture and the Creative Economy, Fairmount Park, Schuylkill River Banks Association, and more than 20 other cultural, environmental and civic organizations, Art in the Open Philadelphia (AiO) is the only citywide event of it’s kind.

This year AiO is part of an “Art Stroll” that joins the opening of the new Barnes Museum and the newly renovated Rodin Museum along the Ben Franklin Parkway. Visitors can begin or complete their Art Stroll with a stop at PMA and the Schuylkill Banks for AiO in full view of the historic and picturesque Schuylkill river. Special family day activities will be offered by a number of partnering organizations on Saturday, May 19, 10 am – 1pm located near the “skate park” section of the park.  A wrap up exhibition of the work created during AiO will be presented at The Independence Seaport Museum, Thursday June 14 - Sunday September 09, 2012.
