100 Things to do in Philly + Events + Philadelphia Deals & more!

This week I will be channeling Coco Chanel in discussing all things nautical. She was the iconic figure who first introduced striped shirts to women's fashion in 1917 after being inspired by the outfits worn by French sailors. The sailor look stuck and has been popular ever since. What's great about this trend is that it's truly timeless, appropriate for women of any age and ideal for those breezy Spring and Summer days.

Of course some rules do apply. For one, do your kids a favor and spare them of the little sailor outfits. Halloween excluded, that is. The trend that I am speaking of is aimed at creating a fun yet sophisticated look for women. Also, please don't go "overboard" and try to wear all your sailor inspired pieces at once. I know it may be tempting, but to stay fashionable my advice is to steer clear of looking too costumey. So, when you're headed to the mall, what are some key pieces to look for? Definitely pick up some breton striped tops, look for solid red's and navy's, select a pair of tailored sailor pants, find the perfect pair of espadrilles, and do don unique nautical jewelry.

Lucky Stripes

A boatneck breton striped shirt is the ultimate nautical item. It looks great with denim for a casual look or with a skirt for a more dressy look. To make an outfit more modern and really pop, chose bright colored jewelry to wear with this loose fitting top. You do have some options like choosing between 3/4 or long sleeves and a boatneck vs. offthe shoulder cut to keep things more interesting.

Once you find just the right striped shirt, it will go perfectly with a little trench and a pair of espadrilles. I always talk about how important it is to dress for your mood. So, if you wake up feeling preppy, throw on this shirt and play around with some bottoms and accessories. And don't be afraid to wear red lipstick with your outfit. There is no better time to try it than when going for a nautical theme. Even if the occasion doesn't call for it, this outfit definitely will.

Infinite Legs

Ever look at a model and envy how long her legs are? Well, you too can achieve this look, all it takes is a pair of sailor pants. You don't have to search high and low to find the perfect pair because these uber flattering trousers are really in this season, so they are readily available at almost any store. The key is to choose a pair with a wide leg, high waist and beautiful button detailing.

Choose wisely and this nautical piece will come in handy when putting outfits together this Spring. These pants will look amazing with blouses, tees and even tank tops. The perks of this trend is that your legs will appear endless and since these pants hug the smallest part of you body, they will also provide a slimming effect. If you are digging the high waist and the sailor motif, you will really love these darling sailor shorts. Both the pants and the shorts can be dressed up with a sexy espadrille or dressed down with a subtle sandal or Sperrys.

Red, White and Blue

These aren't just the colors of the American Flag, but a great color theme to keep in mind when pulling off a nautical look. When you have a set palette it is a lot easier to make sound fashion choices. This will also ensure that the pieces will go well together. Keep in mind that navy looks fantastic with red and always accent the pieces with a hint of gold.

You can also incorporate new trends with some classic traditional ones. Wear a navy blazer with a pair of trendy white cropped jeans and for a pop of color accent the outfit with a pair of red pumps. Each piece of this ensemble can be worn separately, but together you end up with a salty sailor look. Remember, stick to the basics and accent your outfit with metallics and bright colors and you will never again have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.

New Heights

Reach new heights with a gorgeous pair of espadrilles this Spring. These shoes have been around for a long time, but this season they are making a big splash. This is a great investment since they can help you pull off many looks. One tip that I can offer is to not be afraid of reaching for the higher-end designers. They are making gorgeous espadrilles and they are a lot less expensive than you would imagine. So, there is no excuse not to get a pair. Plus they are super comfy and very durable. My favorite pair this season are actually quite affordable. They are the Wyllow Wedge Oxford by Steven. At a price of only $140, you can get them in two colors.

Tying The Knot

When most people think of nautical jewelry, their go-to pieces almost always include an anchor necklace. This season your options will make you rethink how you accessorize. Why not go for a gold knotted bracelet or jewelry that is actually made out of rope material? I would recommend finding interesting items at your favorite boutiques as they would be more likely to carry one-of-a-kind pieces. Remember the way you dress tells the world a lot about who you are, so express you individual style by choosing unique jewelry.

You don't have to be a sailor to pull off a chic nautical look. Keep each element of your outfit clean and and simple, carefully choosing which piece will make a statement. And in the event that you do go sailing, you will be well prepared. Happy shopping ladies!
