Inaugural column -
Why I LOVE PhillyIn this initial blog about Why I LOVE Philly, I am happy to introduce this page as a place to read and write about your favorite people, places and events in Philadelphia. Having lived in and around Philly for most of my adult life (and making frequent trips in from the suburbs when I wasn't in Philly), I already have a grocery list of things that I love about this city. There are places that invoke sights, sounds and smells just by the thought of them. Events like the Mummers Parade and Wing Bowl that are quintessential Philadelphia, definitely need mention. There are iconic people that give back to the community and truly make this the City of Brotherly Love. From the pizza at Tacconelli's (reserve your dough) to skating at Penn's Landing to the phenomenal Philadelphia Sports Events - this city has a lot to offer. I want to highlight everything from the smallest details to the largest building. But this is a two way forum and I want to hear your thoughts too! Where should I visit, who needs to be recognized and what concert or fight card can I NOT afford to miss? I hope that you'll come back regularly and post your thoughts, feelings and experiences. This is a place for loving words, phighting words, appreciative words and, of course, contradictory words. Philadelphians have a lot to say and a lot of heart with which we speak our minds. Phillytodo.com asks that all comments are courteous and respectful at all times. Flagrant and repeat offenders will be flagged, removed and prohibited from making future comments. But we know that won't be necessary here...
Today's LoveToday, on the anniversary of 9/11/01, I want to recognize Philadelphia's Police Officers, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians and our members of the Armed Forces as what I love about Philly. They go into the worst neighborhoods and areas, meet with belligerent people, and run into situations that most of us would run from. They are berated, injured and sometimes killed in the line of duty - and go into their job every day knowing that this is a possibility. We cannot and do not thank them enough for all that they do to keep us safe. While this quick mention is not enough (and certainly won't be the last) to recognize all of their hard work and dedication, hopefully it is enough to let them know that while it often goes unsaid, we appreciate them and the sacrifices they and their families make for us every day. I'd love for you to leave a shout out here for someone you know and love that dedicates themselves unselfishly to the service of our city and or nation. Retired Philadelphia Police Officer and World War II Veteran Jim "Who" McCutcheon and Vietnam Veteran James J. McCutcheon Sr. - this one is for you.
As an additional way to support our Philadelphia Police Officers and Fire Fighters, please be sure to attend
