In September 1992, the Philadelphia Music Alliance joined forces with The Recording Academy to realize their shared mission of recognizing Philadelphia's diverse musical artistry and to nurture emerging talent through educational programs. Working together, an organizing committee was formed to recruit new members to The Recording Academy. In May 1994, the Philadelphia Branch officially opened and quickly grew to gain Chapter status. The Chapter's membership continues to grow every year and includes many of the Philadelphia area's most prominent musicians and music industry professionals.
The Chapter hosts an impressive variety of events for the music community, including a GRAMMY Professional Development Event series and the In The Mix GRAMMY Professional Networking Event series. In addition, the Chapter provides opportunities for its members to network at can't-miss events such as its exclusive Annual Membership Celebration & Holiday Reception, a celebration of local achievements that year, and the annual GRAMMY Awards Telecast Viewing Party, where the local musical community gathers to cheer on the nominees.
Focusing on the need for music education in an era of dwindling arts funding in schools, the Philadelphia Chapter, in conjunction with the GRAMMY Foundation, implements programs designed to bring music education directly to young people. GRAMMY SoundChecks provide high school students and GRAMMY U members with opportunities to go behind the scenes of a live soundcheck with a performing artist and ask them about the music business and life on the road. In 2008, Philadelphia-area students met with John Legend, Jack's Mannequin, Jason Mraz, Raphael Saadiq, and Three Doors Down, among other artists. GRAMMY Career Day, an annual daylong educational event at the University of the Arts, provides hundreds of local high school students with access to a wide variety of interactive workshops such as "In The Studio," "Songwriting Like A Pro," and "Turntablism" taught by leading music industry professionals.
The Philadelphia Chapter has cultivated strong relationships with the city's political and cultural communities and welcomes new opportunities and partnerships. As a visible manifestation of this ongoing priority, the Philadelphia Chapter office is located on the Avenue of the Arts, also home to the stunning Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Academy of Music, the Merriam Theater, the Wilma Theater, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Philadelphia Clef Club.
