Event Description

Yoruba Richen’s award-winning documentary explores the story of how the African-American community is grappling with gay rights in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. Focusing on Maryland in the lead-up to a public referendum on the topic in 2012, the film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and explores questions of acceptance and condemnation in black families and churches.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s historic decision to legalize gay marriage across the nation, join us as we screen this riveting documentary and engage a panel of diverse individuals in post-screening discussion. How are family and community conceptualized for members of Philadelphia’s LGBTQ communities of color? How meaningful is the Supreme Court’s ruling, at the intersections of race, class and sexual identity? And what is, can, and should be the role of black communities in pushing for civil and equal rights for all people?
