Join Art Sanctuary and presenting partner 900AM WURD as they host a free afternoon of musical performances and family-friendly activities, including face painting and moon bounces, honoring the legendary John Coltrane’s contributions to the arts and jazz scene. The free event will take place rain or shine on Sunday, September 6 from noon to 6 p.m. near the Church of the Advocate on Diamond Street in North Philadelphia, between 18th and 19th streets.
Coltrane spent his formidable years in Philadelphia, perfecting his craft as a saxophonist and studying under the city’s most revered jazz musicians. In keeping with the tradition of Philadelphia’s musical excellence, this year’s lineup includes: V. Shayne Frederick, Bootsie Barnes, Juan “Cuco” Castellanos and The AfroCuban Jazz Ensemble, Nasir Dickerson and award-winning jazz trumpeter Duane Eubanks. Headlining the festival is Grammy® nominated and Soul Train Award winner, Maysa, best known for her solo work as a jazz and R&B singer and role as lead vocalist of the internationally renowned group, Incognito.
