SUMMARY:The Lightness of Bearing: Virginia Maksymowicz
DESCRIPTION:The Lightness of Bearing is a selection of works by Virgin
ia Maksymowicz that consider the symbolic resilience and strength of t
he female figure in art and architecture. Pulling from antiquity, Maks
ymowicz blends the mythology of caryatids, architectural columns of wo
men effortlessly bearing the weight of massive architectural structure
s, with contemporary imagery of women from indigenous and ethnic cultu
res bearing the weight of ritualistic traditions. Additional works rei
nforce this conceptual framework with figurative representations and c
oded sculptural elements. The exhibition includes two new works create
d as a nod to the University's Centennial that represent the historica
l spaces that the university occupies. One work honors the \nLenni-Le
nape who were the original inhabitants of the land and who are still l
iving here today. The other is an installation inspired by the Hollybu
sh mansion and Josephine Allen Whitney. Likened to a 19th-century vers
ion of the caryatid, Josephine bore the weight of raising seven childr
en but is largely absent from the historical record. As a metaphor for
sorting out fragmented memories of the past, Maksymowicz creates a Ho
llybush-inspired room as a chaotic jumble of architectural elements an
d plaster casts made from the actual crown moldings found there.\n\nFo
