DESCRIPTION:The Clay Studio (1425 N. American St), Philadelphia’s pr
 eeminent ceramic arts and resident artist’s center, has four thought
 -provoking new exhibitions from alums of their Resident Artist Program
  planned for the fall. Beginning October 13, The Clay Studio’s Jill 
 Bonovitz Gallery will feature “Matter in a Floating World” by form
 er Resident Artist Andrea Marquis, comprised of large, structured clay
  objects. Visitors can also look forward to “Urschrei,” featuring 
 works from multi-media artists Layla Marcelle and Jacob Raeder, otherw
 ise known as Better Lovers. Current Resident Artist Nate Willever’s 
 exhibition utilizes local materials blended into clays and glazes to c
 reate new works that couldn’t have been made anywhere else. Finally,
  The Clay Studio will honor the late artist Leroy Johnson with a speci
 al post-humous exhibition celebrating his incredible life and work as 
 a renowned mixed-media artist in Philadelphia’s arts community. \nE
 ntry to The Clay Studio’s galleries and the shop is free to the publ
 ic. Guests can view exhibitions or items in the shop in person or onli
 ne. The Clay Studio is open for visitors Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to

 a new exhibition featuring Clay Studio Resident Artist alumni Andrea M
 arquis. Her upcoming exhibition of large, seemingly heavy objects resp
 ond to and defy gravity. Gravity is empathy in material, and Heaven is
  both earthly delights and as light as a cloud. “Matter in a Floatin
 g World” will be on display in the Jill Bonovitz Gallery from Octobe
 r 13 to December 31, 2022.\n \nBorn in Salem, Massachusetts, Philadel
 phia-based artist Marquis received her MFA from New York State College
  of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2009 and her BFA in 2000 from Syr
 acuse University. Marquis has participated in Artist in Residence prog
 rams at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, Peters Valley Craft Center, t
 he Archie Bray Foundation, Tyler School of Art, Watershed Center for t
 he Ceramic Arts, and La Maison des métiers D’Art in Quebec City, Ca
 nada. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and w
 as included in the 2015 NCECA Biennial at the Winton Bell Gallery at B
