SUMMARY:Museum for Art in Wood Hosts Gallery Talk for ‘La Famiglia
  with Mark Sfirri
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum for Art in Wood for an in-depth conversati
on with artist and woodturner Mark Sfirri for his current exhibition
Mark Sfirri: La Famiglia.’ During this event, Sfirri will share hi
s way of thinking about the definition of family and its meanings thro
ugh different lenses: families that are chosen vs. born into; families
of species (trees and wood types) and identities; and familial strife
and unconditional love, support, and dysfunction. The artist’s adop
tion of a spontaneous, “flow state” approach in his turning, carvi
ng, and surfacing processes represents a coming to terms with generati
onal passing. The artist will walk attendees through his installations
of sculpture that consider communities comprised of families with the
ir histories, ethnic backgrounds, biases, and quirks—all trying to c
oexist in new and evolving worlds.\nFollowing the gallery talk, visito
rs are encouraged to peruse the Museum Store for holiday gifts, includ
ing books, toys, original artwork and jewelry, unique furniture, and o
ne-of-a-kind objects by some of the best artists and makers working in
  wood.\n\nFor more information visit http://phillytodo.com/events/muse
