SUMMARY:Museum for Art in Wood hosts December First Friday for ‘Mark
  Sfirri: La Famiglia’
DESCRIPTION:The Museum for Art in Wood welcomes Old City Visitors for
December’s First Friday to explore its latest exhibition ‘Mark Sfi
rri: La Famigila,’ the first museum-organized solo exhibition by cel
ebrated artist and woodturner Mark Sfirri. The highly personal exhibit
ion of new and never-before-seen work offers different approaches to q
uestions of lineage, traversal, and the experience of belonging: biolo
gical families vs. selected families; species and identities; and fami
lial strife and unconditional love, support, and dysfunction. La Famig
lia represents a coming to terms with generational passing through Sfi
rri’s adoption of a spontaneous, “flow state” approach in his wo
od turning, carving, and surface processes. \nIn addition to new work
s by Sfirri, the exhibition features a collaborative project that incl
udes the work of 45 artists and colleagues who were asked to contribut
e a two-dimensional artwork depicting an “immigrant” of their choi
ce, whether a person or an idea. After exploring ‘La Famiglia,’ vi
sitors are encouraged to peruse the Museum Store for holiday gifts, in
cluding books, toys, original artwork and jewelry, unique furniture, a
nd one-of-a-kind objects by some of the best artists and makers workin
 g in wood.\n\nFor more information visit http://phillytodo.com/events/
