DESCRIPTION:Woodford Mansion, a National Historic Landmark located in 
 East Fairmount Park, tells the story of the 18th- and 19th-century res
 ident who called the Colonial estate home.  Celebrate the 258th anniv
 ersary of Woodford’s founding with a visit to this magnificent treas
 ure filled with significant history, antiques, and architecture.\n \n
 William Coleman built his one and one-half story Georgian-style summer
  home, servants’ house and stable between 1756 and 1758.  The 12-ac
 re plot was attractive to Coleman due to its close proximity to the Sc
 huylkill River and its relatively comfortable commute from Philadelphi
 a.  The summer estate may have earned its name from the surrounding w
 oods and nearby ford in the river, hence Woodford.  The Mansion’s o
 riginal design, with its symmetrical layout, was meant to create a Pal
 ladian look, a style that came into fashion during the Enlightenment i
 n both Europe and North America.  The small size of the property indi
 cates that Coleman had no intention to farm, but rather to use the Man
 sion as his “gentleman’s retirement” or summer home.  \n \nGu
